Garden View was founded in 1978 by Mark Meahl and has grown into a family-run landscape, pool, maintenance, and nursery company known for craftsmanship and value. Over the decades, our work has earned 100+ awards from the California Landscape Contractors Association. Hedge Hut brings that same experience and horticultural rigor to one thing: great hedges.

Japanese Boxwood
Japanese Boxwood is ideal for shaping pathways, low borders, and defining spaces. This versatile evergreen shrub typically grows between 1 to 3 feet tall.
A dense, long-lived hedge starts with one rule: keep the top slightly narrower than the base. That gentle taper—about a 5–10° lean or roughly 6–12 inches wider at the bottom on taller hedges—lets sunlight reach the lower leaves so they keep photosynthesizing instead of going bare.
Formal hedges respond best to light, regular shearing that preserves the taper and a level top. Informal hedges prefer selective thinning and heading cuts just inside the canopy; this prevents the “green shell” effect and encourages interior buds to push new growth.
If a hedge is already top-heavy, correct it gradually over several trims rather than in one drastic cut; avoid removing more than about a third of the foliage at a time. Support recovery with deep watering, mulch, and a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Time heavier work for cooler parts of the day, and prune bloomers right after flowering.
Work with sharp, clean tools, trim from the bottom up, and step back often to check the silhouette. Skip the common mistakes—mushroom shapes, single severe reductions, and repeated surface-only shearing—and you’ll build thicker, healthier, more resilient hedges season after season.
Hedges don’t just happen. In most cases, we can’t plant a tree or shrub and expect it to stay dense and aesthetically pleasing without some effort on our part. The two general categories of hedge candidates are either large shrubs that grow large, or trees that respond to topping-pruning by generating new growth along the trunk.
When planting a new hedge, don’t let the plant grow upward to the desired height immediately. Allow the plant to grow in 1-foot increments, then cut back 4 inches. This forces new limbs closer together, which will create that compact, dense look, without compromising health.
